Bilingual Multimedia Journalist, The Prairie News

The bilingual multimedia journalist for The Prairie News, the student digital newspaper at WTAMU, is responsible for reporting, shooting, and editing news stories, finding story ideas, developing contacts, and publishing news and community stories regularly in a bilingual format (Spanish & English). Occasionally, multimedia journalists will be asked to lead a training or workshop for staff or high school students. 

Weekly Commitment
The weekly commitment for multimedia journalists is 8 hours (4 hours in the newsroom, with 4 hours of remote work or fieldwork). The wage for a multimedia journalist for The Prairie News is $11/hour. 

Responsibilities
  • Produce campus and local community news in a bilingual format. 
  • Build skills in listening, communication, organization, leadership, and troubleshooting.
  • Attend professional development and training as assigned. 
  • Produce content for a variety of digital platforms. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Necessary Qualifications  
  • Ability to write and speak Spanish fluently. 
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Proficiency in AP style, journalistic convention, and English composition.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students, faculty, and administration professionally.
  • Familiarity with the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Digital journalism or media-related major. 
  • Familiarity with the NAHJ Cultural Competence Handbook. 
  • Completed MCOM 1336 (Basic Video Production), MCOM 2311 (Media Writing), and MCOM 2345 (Principles of Journalism) or basic video/audio production knowledge/experience or experience working for a news publication.
